'Stage' is a tuner's word, not Volkswagen's. But the convention is now mature enough to be useful — provided you understand what each stage actually changes.

Stage 1

ECU recalibration on stock hardware. Gains come from boost, timing, and fuelling that VW left on the table for emissions, fuel-economy and warranty reasons.

Stage 2

Calibration plus a high-flow downpipe, sealed intake, and (ideally) an upgraded intercooler. Hardware lets the calibration breathe — gains compound.
